Jumeirah Says Ole to Mexican Week

Jumeirah Says Ole to Mexican Week
For more than 30 years, Roma Mariachi has enchanted crowds throughout Italy and Europe with the bright sounds of Mexican folk music. This week, the talented ensemble are performing at the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel and Spa.

They are the centrepiece of Mexican Week, a cultural celebration at the resort’s Garden Room, that ends Friday 15 March.

The event is a collaboration between the Jumeirah and the Mexican Embassy.

“This is the fifth time we have hosted this event since 2013, and it has becomes more popular every time. People love the cuisine, the atmosphere and the music,” said Jumeirah Marketing Manager Ola Allabban.

On Wednesday night, Mexican Ambassador to Kuwait Miguel Angel Isidro, his wife, and other foreign dignitaries joined a crowd of 100 to watch dinner performances by the Rome-based mariachi group and to savor the fresh flavours of Mexican cuisine. On the menu were nachos, chicken tortilla soup, tender steak fajitas, chicken enchiladas, zesty ceviche and refried beans.

Among the most popular offerings were the build-your-own taco stations featuring pico de gallo, queso, and creamy guacamole redolent with coriander and lime.

Most of the recipes came directly from the Mexican Embassy, said Allabban.

From ceilings criss-crossed with Mexican flags, pastel banners and lights to tables and napkins festooned with bright floral patterns, the ambiance was pure fiesta.

The waitstaff, some wearing sombreros and traditional blankets, others in floral patterned shirts, offered guests sparkling virgin mojitos, a traditional lime and mint cocktail.

Mariachi Romatitlan, formed in 1983 by Mexican expatriates, played as they took to the stage in their charro attire, drawing applause with traditional songs like “Cielito Lindo” on guitar, trumpet and violin, accompanied by a pair of dancers.

The highlight of the evening came when Ambassador Isidro and his wife took to the stage and sang with the 10-member ensemble.

“The turnout has been great,” said Allabban. “People like seeing a live band and experiencing a different kind of music with some tasty food. It’s been a huge success.”
