Radisson Blu Hotel commemorates the 40th Anniversary
It all started in the mid-1970s when the Marafie Family saw the rapid development and growth that was taking place in Kuwait and decided to enter the Hotel industry. The Kuwait SAS Hotel opened its door in October 1980. The grand opening of the 200 room hotel took place in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Bertil of Sweden. The Mohamedi II, a custom-made dhow, specially commissioned for the hotel opening by Husain Marafie, sailed to Kuwait from Calicut in India and took its place at the hotel in 1982 and became the renowned Al Boom restaurant.
The Radisson Blu Hotel went through many changes and introduced many concepts throughout all those years. The one that stands out is Peacock Chinese Restaurant that opened in 1983 and is a popular hub visited by families for generations. One of the largest projects is the magnificent Al Hashemi II, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest wooden dhow ever built. The Al Hashemi II opened in 2000 to widespread acclaim, just in time for the hotel’s twentieth-anniversary celebrations. The vessel represents an awesome tangible symbol of Kuwait’s distinguished maritime heritage for future generations.
